What to Wear Under a Wedding Dress in the Florida Heat

Before you spend a Saturday in the undergarment aisle, stop. If you’ve been searching what to wear under a wedding dress, the honest answer from our St. Petersburg fitting rooms is far less than you think.

Modern gowns are built to do the work. The bodice holds you up, the lining smooths you out, and in a Tampa Bay summer every extra layer you add is one more thing to sweat through.

We get this question at nearly every appointment, usually right after a bride has bought three things she’ll never wear. So here’s what we actually tell her.

What to wear under a wedding dress with built-in support

Usually just a pair of no-show underwear close to your skin tone. Gowns have built-in support, so most brides need nothing else.

Skin tone is the part most people get wrong. White underwear under an ivory gown shows up more than a nude pair does, especially in a sheer panel or bright sun on the beach at Pass-a-Grille. Seams show too, particularly through crepe or satin. Pick something smooth, try it on under a thin dress at home, and buy two pairs.

That’s the short version of what to wear under a wedding dress. Everything past that depends on your gown, your body and how you feel in it.

Do you need a bra or shapewear under a wedding dress?

No bra, and shapewear only if you truly want it. Brides try on without bras at our boutique, and some plus size brides may add shapewear, but it’s uncommon.

This surprises people, because most advice online about what to wear under a wedding dress assumes you need a lot more. A bride with a fuller bust often comes in convinced she’ll need serious hardware, then she zips into a boned bodice and finds the lift is already there. The support is engineered into the seams, and a bra strap or band can actually fight the shape of the gown.

Shapewear under a wedding dress is a tougher call because it’s mostly a comfort question, and there’s a real tradeoff. A smooth layer can help a satin or crepe gown lay cleanly over the stomach or hips. It’s also hot, it’s hard to get down in a bathroom stall, and the tight top edge can roll and show through the fabric. If you’re a plus size bride who feels better with that layer, wear it, and bring it to your fittings. If you’re buying it because you assume you have to, put it back.

Our what to wear to a bridal appointment guide covers the shopping day itself, and our plus size page explains how we fit fuller figures.

Should you wear a corset under a wedding dress?

Most brides should not. If your gown already has boning, a separate corset under a wedding dress is doubling up on a job that’s been done.

There’s a common mix-up about what to wear under a wedding dress with a laced back. A corset back is a closure, where the gown laces up instead of zipping. Boning is the structure sewn into the channels of the bodice. Neither one is a garment you buy separately, and a gown with either feature is already holding you in. Our corset wedding dress guide explains the difference in detail.

Wearing a second boned layer under a boned gown adds bulk at the waist, and it can throw off the fit your seamstress worked to get. In August, it also adds a layer of heat right where you feel it most.

If you love a very soft gown with little structure, the conversation about what to wear under a wedding dress changes. Talk to your stylist before you buy anything, because a seamstress may be able to add what’s missing to the gown itself. That’s usually a better fix than strapping something on under it.

What should you bring to your wedding dress fittings?

Bring the exact underwear and shoes you’ll wear on your wedding day, to every fitting. Alterations are built around what’s under the gown, so a change later changes the fit.

Once you’ve settled on what to wear under a wedding dress, keep it the same from the first fitting to the last. Allow 8 to 10 weeks for fittings, and treat each one like a dress rehearsal. If you wear thin cotton to your first appointment and add a shapewear layer at the last one, your waist, hips and even your hem can shift. A change that small can pull a seam tight or leave a zipper fighting you on the morning of the wedding.

Our seamstresses work in house at the boutique, which makes this easier than it sounds. If you do change your mind, tell us, and we can look at it on the spot. You’ll want to know how we plan this out, and our guide to wedding dress alterations in Tampa Bay walks through it.

Remember that bridal sizing runs smaller than street sizing, and gowns are ordered to your largest measurement. So the fit you see at your first fitting is a starting point. That’s where these wedding dress undergarments matter, because you’re being fitted around them from day one.

What to wear under a wedding dress in the Florida heat

As little as possible, and only breathable fabric against your skin. Heat is the best argument we know for skipping the extra layers.

The National Weather Service tells people to wear lightweight, loose fitting, light-colored clothing in hot weather. A fitted gown is one out of three at best, so the layer under it should be working with you.

Its Tampa Bay office adds a detail every outdoor bride should know. Heat index values are measured for shade, and direct sunlight can raise them by up to 15 degrees. A 4 p.m. ceremony on the sand at Fort De Soto in July is a different world from the shaded forecast on your phone, and that’s before you add a boned bodice.

For a summer bride, what to wear under a wedding dress starts with skipping anything synthetic and thick under the skirt. Thigh chafing is the real summer problem, and a very thin pair of slip shorts can solve it without any compression. Let your deodorant dry fully before you step into the gown, and have someone handy with a bottle of water and a small towel for the photos. The Weather Service also says to drink plenty of water even when you aren’t thirsty, which is easy to forget on the day.

Frequently asked questions about bridal undergarments

What should I wear under a wedding dress?

For most brides, what to wear under a wedding dress comes down to no-show underwear close to your skin tone. Gowns have built-in support, so you can usually skip the bra. Some plus size brides may add shapewear, but that’s uncommon. At The Dressing Room in St. Petersburg, your stylist will tell you what your specific gown needs before you buy anything.

Do you wear a bra with a wedding dress?

Usually not. Gowns at The Dressing Room have built-in support, and our brides try them on without bras. A boned bodice lifts and holds you on its own, and a bra can show or fight the shape. If you’re nervous about support, tell your stylist and try the gown on before you make any decision.

What to wear under a wedding dress with a low back?

Often nothing extra at all, because the support in a low back gown is usually built into the front and sides. That’s good news, since a low back leaves nowhere to hide a bra band. Ask your stylist in St. Petersburg how your gown is constructed, and your seamstress can make adjustments during your fittings if needed.

Do plus size brides need shapewear?

No, not as a rule. Some plus size brides may add it, but it’s uncommon, and our gowns have built-in support in sizes up to 30. Wear it if it makes you feel good, and skip it if it doesn’t. Whatever you decide about what to wear under a wedding dress, bring it to each fitting at our St. Petersburg boutique so we can alter around it.

What to wear under a wedding dress in summer?

Choose smooth, breathable underwear and keep it minimal. In a Tampa Bay summer, each extra layer holds heat against your skin. If chafing worries you, very thin slip shorts usually help without adding compression. Avoid thick shapewear unless you really want it, and plan for shade, water and a little time to cool down before your photos.

Should I wear what I’ll wear on the day to my fittings?

Yes, to every single fitting. What to wear under a wedding dress matters here because alterations are built around it, so changing it at the end can change the fit. Bring your wedding day shoes as well, since they decide your hem. Fittings at The Dressing Room are handled in house, so tell your seamstress straight away if your plans change.

Do I need a slip or petticoat under my gown?

Most gowns come lined, with any skirt layers already sewn in, so a slip rarely belongs on your list of what to wear under a wedding dress. Very full skirts are the exception, and your stylist will tell you if a particular gown needs help. Don’t buy one in advance. Ask at your St. Petersburg appointment, try the gown as it comes, and decide from there.

What should I wear to try on wedding dresses?

Wear no-show underwear and something easy to take off, like a button front top or a loose dress. You don’t need to bring a bra, because brides try on without them here. If you know you’d like shapewear, bring it. Your stylist at The Dressing Room in St. Petersburg stays with you and helps you in and out of each gown.

Can a seamstress add cups to a wedding dress?

Often, yes, particularly on a softer gown with less structure. It’s usually a better option than wearing something separate under the dress. Alterations are handled in house at The Dressing Room in St. Petersburg, so you can raise it at your first fitting. Your seamstress will look at how the gown is made and tell you what will work.

What to wear under a wedding dress for a beach wedding?

Keep it light. No-show underwear in your skin tone is usually plenty for a Gulf beach ceremony, since sun can make a thin gown more see-through than it looks indoors. Skip the heavy shapewear, and check the gown in daylight before your wedding. If you’re marrying at Clearwater Beach or Siesta Key, tell your stylist early.

Ask a stylist before you buy anything

The real answer to what to wear under a wedding dress depends on the gown, so please try the gown first and shop for undergarments second. Your stylist will tell you exactly what you need, and it will probably be less than what’s in your online cart.
